About Uttara Bank Limited

Uttara Bank PLC, one of Bangladesh’s oldest and most esteemed financial institutions, celebrated its 50th anniversary of banking service in 2015. Established to serve the underprivileged population of East Pakistan, Uttara Bank has a storied history marked by significant milestones and contributions to the nation’s economy.

The bank began its journey as the “Eastern Banking Corporation” on January 28, 1965, with just four branches. By the time of Bangladesh’s independence, it had expanded to 60 branches, playing a crucial role during the Non-cooperation Movement in 1971 by performing treasury functions for East Bengal.

Following independence, Eastern Banking Corporation was nationalized and renamed “Uttara Bank” on March 26, 1972. Over the years, Uttara Bank embarked on a path of growth and innovation, becoming a key player in Bangladesh’s banking sector. After its privatization in June 1983, the bank was renamed “Uttara Bank Limited” and soon became one of the largest private-sector banks in the country.

Uttara Bank set the standard in the banking industry by capturing a significant share of inward foreign remittances and providing loans to large, medium, and small businesses, traders, and farmers. On July 3, 2023, the bank underwent another transformation, rebranding itself as “Uttara Bank PLC” to reflect its evolving identity. Today, Uttara Bank PLC is recognized as the most trusted bank in Bangladesh.

Currently, Uttara Bank PLC operates 247 branches and 39 sub-branches, all connected through an online network. The bank continues to focus on expanding its reach by developing rural, SME financing, and offshore banking services. Additionally, Uttara Bank PLC is actively embracing alternative banking channels, offering SMS banking, internet banking, and a growing network of ATMs. The bank also has ATM-sharing agreements with partner banks to enhance customer convenience.
