Uttara Bank PLC, one of Bangladesh’s oldest and most esteemed financial institutions, celebrated its 50th anniversary of banking service in 2015. Established to serve the underprivileged population of East Pakistan, Uttara Bank has a storied history marked by significant milestones and contributions to the nation’s economy.

The bank began its journey as the “Eastern Banking Corporation” on January 28, 1965, with just four branches. By the time of Bangladesh’s independence, it had expanded to 60 branches, playing a crucial role during the Non-cooperation Movement in 1971 by performing treasury functions for East Bengal.

Following independence, Eastern Banking Corporation was nationalized and renamed “Uttara Bank” on March 26, 1972. After its privatization in June 1983, the bank was renamed “Uttara Bank Limited” and soon became one of the largest private-sector banks in the country.

On July 3, 2023, the bank underwent another transformation, rebranding itself as “Uttara Bank PLC” to reflect its evolving identity.
